On 1st October 2024, over 100 members of the biotech community – including scientists, researchers, engineers and journalists – gathered at London’s tech hub, CodeNode, for an inaugural AI Day event. Additionally, another 800+ people joined via livestream to witness a significant milestone for InstaDeep, as we showcased our pioneering AI technologies.

We spotlight the four key innovations presented, underscoring our continued commitment to scaling capabilities and advancing algorithmic innovation.

Kyber: InstaDeep’s Near-Exascale Supercomputing Cluster

We announced Kyber – our newly developed, in-house supercomputing cluster. Kyber delivers a 10x increase in computational power, positioning InstaDeep at the forefront of AI research by providing partners with the capacity to handle massive AI workloads seamlessly, avoiding compute delays or resource bottlenecks.

Kyber’s Specifications:

  • 224 Nvidia H100 GPUs
  • 86,000 CPU cores
  • 1.7 petabytes of persistent storage
  • 400 Gbps RoCE network

Kyber ranks among the world’s top 100 most powerful clusters1 and is among the top 20 H100 GPU clusters2. Nearing exascale levels, it boasts 0.5 exaFLOPs of compute power – a major leap in scalable AI infrastructure, repeatable and scalable for future demand.

Bayesian Flow Networks (BFN): A New Class of Generative AI Models

We introduced Bayesian Flow Networks (BFNs), a novel generative AI concept developed at InstaDeep.

BFNs are designed to offer a unique approach to generative AI, particularly in biotech applications like protein sequencing. Unlike conventional diffusion or auto-regressive models, BFNs generate discrete data continuously, allowing gradient-based sampling. This makes BFNs highly effective for controllable data generation across various biological modalities.

With BFNs, researchers can explore intricate datasets more precisely, with enhanced control and speed, potentially accelerating breakthroughs in drug discovery and personalised medicine.

DeepChain: InstaDeep’s Platform for Flagship BioAI Models

We also unveiled the latest iteration of InstaDeep’s DeepChain platform – our cutting-edge solution for the life sciences.

DeepChain is designed to enable seamless deployment of InstaDeep’s bioAI solutions to BioNTech and external clients through a unified platform. We are launching with two flagship bioAI models: ProtBFN & AbBFN, our generative protein models, and foundation models for DNA, the Nucleotide Transformer & SegmentNT.

Fast, powerful, and easy to set up, DeepChain allows workflows to be accessed with just a few lines of code. Users can customise models with parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods and collaborate using Laila, our AI assistant that operates via natural language input.

Laila in the Lab: Our AI-Powered Lab Assistant

The event’s finale was a live demonstration of Laila, DeepChain’s AI agent operating in the lab. Through a real-time connection to BioNTech’s R&D-focused TechLabs in Mainz, we watched as Laila was deployed into an active lab workflow.

Laila is designed to enhance productivity by automating both routine and complex tasks, allowing scientists to focus on more critical aspects of their research. By integrating Laila into lab environments, we showed our vision of AI transforming everyday workflows – improving efficiency and pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery.

We are excited to continue pushing the frontiers of AI innovation. Watch the full event webcast here, and stay tuned for future updates. If you share our vision, join us as we accelerate towards an AI-first world that benefits everyone.
